Creating a masterpiece A floor speaker with the size and complexity of Beolab 90 is quite something to manufacture. The top tower is cast in 10mm thick plastic, and the main cabinet is solidly cast in aluminium. These are fitted together and all the amplifiers and drivers are mounted, the software is then installed and as the last step the "naked" loudspeaker is clad in the Alchemy Edition bronze mesh and the aluminium crowns are installed. And yet it began with a disarmingly simple brief: “We want a new reference loudspeaker. Make the future of sound tangible.” A prototype accompanied that brief—a chunky stack of wooden boxes that could send sound freely dancing through the room. It was an extraordinary listening experience, and it made one thing clear: such a performance demanded a visual and haptic concept without precedent. Looking at Beolab 90 today, there is no doubt that the concept found its mark. It has become an icon—an embodiment of the vision of sound. But imagine those first days after the brief arrived: a single blank sheet of paper, and from it, weeks of exploration, countless directions, an open field of possibility. The breakthrough came with the idea of a four-point sail. Fabric rhombus shape is capable of generating maximum tension from a minimal structure.
