Based in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, the creative team “SEN” consists of five peers from different disciplines who explore new value and interpretation by working hands-on with local materials and culture. For DESIGNART TOKYO, four members—Kiichi Ueda, Hiroaki Onishi, Rikuo Takata, and Ryoya Fukaji—will take part. Echizen, a region with a long tradition of crafts such as washi paper, forged blades, lacquerware, ceramics, and tansu chests, is deliberately reimagined as a “neighborhood.” Under the theme “within the neighborhood,” their works focus on Echizen washi, a material close at hand yet rich in possibilities. Through dialogue with artisans and a multifaceted engagement with materials, SEN seeks to present perspectives that combine depth with lightness—an approach made possible precisely because it grows out of what is familiar and nearby.
