For the observant stroller the streets of Tokyo are a showroom for self-made furniture utilising ready-to-hand materials and available space in inventive ways. Inspired by these vernacular pieces, which I came across during my stay as an artist in residence at Paradise AiR in Matsudo, I developed a series of DIY furniture that can be built with standard materials available at most Japanese hardware stores. The series is assembled with stainless steel screws and revolves around a basic principle of construction that is expanded in various ways, resulting in a stool, a low bench, a tall bench, and a bookshelf.
As the production and consumption of furniture becomes increasingly globalised, I want this project to encourage urban residents to DIY furniture that is grounded in local materials and typologies.
